By Robert Schenkkan
Directed by Jorge Andrade

The Rooster of Barcelos is Portugal’s most popular souvenir. Legends say he miraculously came back to life at the dinner table to save a pilgrim wrongly accused of a crime, but the rooster himself has more than a few questions about his own story.

He demands answers from Prime Minister Salazar, the fascist dictator who ruled Portugal for 40 years. The gloves are off and the feathers are flying as the Rooster and Salazar throw down over the pretty lies and ugly fictions that crippled the people of Portugal for decades.

From Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright Robert Schenkkan in collaboration with Portugal's premier Theater Company, Mala Voadora, comes an outrageous political satire that reminds us how easily stories can be corrupted and cautions us to watch out for fowl play.

Producing Company

Mala Voadora

Mala voadora is a cultural organization whose action encompasses both art and reflective thought. In the beginning, the company was formed to produce theatrical work by its founding artists, but over time it has expanded the scope of its activities to include works by other artists, theater training programs, artist gatherings, accessibility initiatives, public education and engagement, book publishing, and more. Mala voadora was started in 2003 by Jorge Andrade and José Capela and, since then, has benefited by the collaboration of many people, from many parts of the world. The diversity of mala voadora’s shows stems from the diversity of local, national, and international artists involved in its projects, and our productions often draw from other artistic and social forms, like film, documentary, concert performance, stand-up comedy, or a great big party. Our creative partnerships have included artists from Australia, Belgium, Bosnia Herzegovina, Brazil, Cape Verde, the Czech Republic, England, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Scotland, Slovenia, and the United States.
